Calculation method

Formula & methodology

The result above is backed by the calculator-specific formulas and assumptions shown here.

Weighted average priceΣ(Quantity × Purchase price) ÷ Σ Quantity
Required quantity for target averageq = Current quantity × (Current average − Target average) ÷ (Target average − New purchase price)

The target-average planner is scoped to averaging down, where New purchase price < Target average < Current average.

Method & assumptions

Each purchase contributes according to its quantity, so the calculator uses a weighted average rather than a simple average of the entered prices.

Lot cost is calculated as quantity × purchase price, total investment is the sum of all lot costs, and weighted average price is total investment ÷ total quantity.

The target-average planner solves the weighted-average equation for the unknown additional quantity without rounding intermediate values.

When an exact required quantity is fractional, the calculator also shows a whole-share rounded-up illustration using ceil(required quantity).

Brokerage, STT, exchange charges, taxes and capital-gains treatment are intentionally excluded from this calculator.

Important assumption

This calculator does not recommend whether you should enter, exit or average a position.

Examples

Worked examples

Examples use this calculator’s own inputs and outputs, not generic page filler.

Example 01Three purchases with different quantities100 @ ₹250 + 50 @ ₹220 + 150 @ ₹280

Total quantity 300 · Total investment ₹78,000 · Weighted average ₹260

Example 02Average down to a target priceCurrent: 100 @ ₹300 · Buy at ₹200 · Target ₹250

Buy 100 additional units for ₹20,000 · Resulting average ₹250

Frequently asked questions

Important assumptions and practical details for this calculator.

Why is a weighted average different from a simple average?+

A simple average gives every entered price equal weight. A stock average must account for how many units were bought at each price, so larger purchases affect the result more.

Why does quantity matter when calculating my average price?+

Your cost basis is the sum of quantity × price for every purchase. The final average is that total cost divided by the total quantity held.

What does the target-average planner calculate?+

It estimates the additional quantity required at a proposed lower purchase price to reach a chosen lower average, then verifies the resulting weighted average.

Why can a target average be unreachable?+

For this averaging-down planner, the new purchase price must be below the target average, and the target average must be below the current average. If that relationship is not satisfied, buying a non-negative quantity cannot produce the requested result within this mode.

Does this include brokerage, STT, taxes or capital gains?+

No. This version calculates acquisition-price averages only. Brokerage, STT, exchange charges, taxes and capital-gains treatment are outside its scope.

Does the calculator tell me whether averaging down is a good idea?+

No. It performs arithmetic only and does not recommend whether you should enter, exit or average a position.
